About
The Sporting Aces is a sports-based charity, based in Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire, working with children and young adults with a range of physical, learning and communication difficulties. Our participants have very limited opportunities to take part in age-appropriate mainstream activities and to socialise, leading to increased loneliness and isolation and poor physical and mental health outcomes. We provide multi-sports sessions at no cost to participants, primarily on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, but also on some weekdays in school/college vacations. Using sporting activities tailored to each individual’s abilities, our fun and active sessions develop physical skills and fitness, leading to increased confidence, self-esteem and resilience, foster friendships, build team-working and communication skills, and provide an invaluable sense of community to this marginalised group.
We seek volunteers to help the coaching team deliver their tailored lesson plans. Volunteers help the participants engage in the activities, while scaffolding interactions between the participants. Our regular sessions run on Saturday afternoons 1345-1630 for younger participants, which include a dance class, multisports drills and a chill-out arts-and-crafts hour. Sunday afternoon sessions run 1300-1600 for older participants and focus on sports skills. Volunteers can contribute as their time allows, but we ask them to honour commitments so that we can properly plan for the safeguarding of our participants. Volunteers will be asked to undergo PVG checks. We maintain records for the Saltire Awards scheme for volunteering.
