I still can't stand but I'll stand for you
Hello, my name is Ciara McCarthy. I am profoundly deaf and have bilateral cochlear implants, cerebral palsy, and autism. I also identify as queer and use they/them pronouns. In my free time, I am an award-winning disability activist.
I am excited to announce that I am running for Student President. After serving as Vice President of Diversity and Wellbeing, I have discovered a deep passion for student politics. I am eager to continue my work over the past year and build upon the projects I have initiated.
As Student President, I will
- Continue to prioritise and advocate for marginalised student groups. This includes ensuring that further education is accessible to BIPOC, LGBTQAI+, disabled, care-experienced and international students. As a part of my campaign work, I am committed to promoting diversity and actively working to combat discrimination and prejudice.
- Advocate for improving accessibility on campus for students with disabilities, additional support needs, and parents. I am willing to work closely with the college administration to ensure that the campus is easily accessible and that policies are in place to provide a positive experience for all students.
- Work closely with the broader college to ensure students are actively involved in decision-making. I will establish and maintain an open communication channel with the college and proactively seek student feedback and suggestions to ensure their voices are heard. I will ensure you have a strong and influential voice shaping your education.
