Peer Support Programme

There is an opportunity for Care Experienced and Estranged students looking to go to University next year to access some peer support from students who have already been on this journey.

Strathclyde’s Care Experienced and Estranged Society members have volunteered their time to support students from similar backgrounds and are considering applying to University.  They have first-hand experience and knowledge of University life as a CE/ Estranged student and look to offer advice and guidance as well as point you in the right direction for further information such as financial support and access to systems.

Who are the Mentors?

Mentors are 2nd /3rd year students from Strathclyde University who are members of the Care A. Experienced and Estranged Students Society. They have volunteered to participate and offer to fellow CE/estranged students applying to University. Many of these mentors are motivated because they understand how daunting it can be to transition to University and they want to offer their support and advice to make it easier for new students.

The mentors have received a 3-hour training session to help them best support you, but please bear in mind our mentors are not councillors or university staff and are offering help and support based on their own experiences.

No , you can be applying to any university or be thinking of applying.

How can the mentors help me?

Mentors are not counsellors or university experts however, just like you they were once new students who identified as CE/Estranged. As mentors they can offer peer support and advice and signpost you to resources and points of contact for further information. Should your mentor be unable to answer your question, or direct you to the right place, all participants are also able to contact their respective union/association's named contact for additional help.

How often will we meet?

Mentors will be partnered up in pairs and we advise to meet every 2 weeks to discuss and issues/concerns and questions you may have. You may Arrange meetings online or in-person (following government guidelines). However, the frequency of contact can be decided between yourselves, It really is up to you how they work it could be anything from coffee meet-ups to trying out a new sport together.

How long is the programme?

We aim to run the program From Feb 2021 until April 2021 with the possibility of extending this up to the end of the academic year if there is demand.
