Glasgow is working towards becoming a sustainable food city with projects including allotments, community gardens, social enterprise cafes, and community food hubs and opportunities for volunteers to get involved. More information can be found here.

The annual Glasgow Goes Green Festival will be takes place in March, hosted by University of Glasgow, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Strathclyde.

Sustainable Food and Drink Resources

Within the college:

  • Water bottle refill stations throughout both campuses – pick up a free reusable water bottle at CitySA!
  • Encouraging the use of reusable coffee cups in our cafes
  • Scholars restaurant offers fresh, seasonal, local food including food grown on the rooftop garden.

Other resources:

The Too Good to Go app can be used to buy food which would otherwise go to waste at a reduced price from shops and cafes.

Zero waste shops allow you to use your own containers to buy food, reducing plastic waste, and sell local fresh produce

Don’t Throw It Away

  • Charity shops throughout Glasgow sell donated clothes, books and other items to stop them going to waste and raise money for charity.
  • Buying vintage clothing saves resources used to make new clothes. Kilo sales can be a good way to buy vintage, look out for Vintage Vera events.
  • Buy and sell old clothes through Vinted or Depop to stop them going to landfill and make some extra money.
  • There are lots of alterations and repair shops in Glasgow where you can get clothes mended or altered so that they can last longer.
  • Repair Café Glasgow offers monthly meetings where you can get help to repair broken items, from household items and furniture to technology and clothing.
  • Glasgow Tool Library shares tools and skills and run practical classes so you can repair broken items instead of throwing them out.

Sustainable Transport

Cycling is a great way to travel more sustainably while also improving your health and fitness, and saving money:

The college has cycle facilities including bike storage, lockers and Dr Bike clinics. For more information visit the City of Glasgow College website.

Bike for Good sell refurbished bikes and run a bike repair service. They also offer repair classes and tool hire so you can learn to look after your bike and cycle more.

Cycle Streets helps you to plan cycle routes based on whether you prefer faster routes or routes with less traffic.

By taking public transport, you'll reduce your carbon footprint compared to driving. Citymapper is a good way to plan routes within Glasgow by bus or subway and Traveline Scotland allows you to plan routes on public transport throughout Scotland.
